Crackle Paste is the only product on this shelf you buy because it fails on purpose. Every other medium here is trying to hold together; this one is formulated to split as it dries, opening a network of fine cracks across the surface. Our photographs show the result on a board — a pale panel covered edge to edge in a close, irregular craquelure, the kind of surface that reads as an aged wall or an old painting.
That makes it a decorative material rather than a preparation one. Antiqued lettering and signage, distressed backgrounds, faux-aged furniture panels, mixed-media pieces that want a weathered ground — these are the jobs it exists for. Colour washed over a dry crackled surface settles into the cracks and darkens them, which is what turns a texture into an effect.
How much it cracks is in your hands, not the jar's. A thicker layer opens wider, more dramatic cracks; a thin one gives a fine, close network. Our photographs show both — a delicate craquerelle over most of the panel, and a heavier ridged application worked with a brush. How long does it take to crack?
The cracks open as the layer dries rather than on application, so leave Crackle Paste undisturbed and flat while it does. Moving or touching a drying panel disturbs the pattern as it forms.
