This is the bottle that does the unglamorous half of oil painting: thinning colour on the palette and washing brushes at the end of a session. Put that beside the imported alternative and the case makes itself. Our Daler-Rowney Low Odour Thinner is Rs. 26.65 per millilitre — about fifteen times as much. The refined bottle is worth its price for the paint and for the air in a closed room, but pouring it into a jar to rinse bristles is money going down a drain. Buy both, use each for what it is good at.

The bottle is clear plastic with a white screw cap, and the blue label reads GoldStar above GOLD STAR in large letters, then TURPENTINE OIL, the volume 120 ml, the code GTO-120, and GOLD STAR DRAWING & ART MATERIAL along the foot. The turpentine itself is water-clear through the plastic.

Turpentine is a solvent and deserves ordinary respect: work with a window open, keep it away from children and from heat, and spread solvent-soaked rags out to dry rather than balling them into a bin. The label makes no safety or purity claim, so neither do we.
