Stand oil is linseed oil that has been cooked. Heating it without air polymerises the oil into something thick and syrupy, and that single change is what the whole bottle is for: paint mixed with stand oil flows out and settles as it dries, so the ridges a brush leaves sink into a smooth, enamel-like surface instead of standing there permanently.

You can see the difference before you open it. In our photographs this oil is deep gold and clings visibly to the inside of the glass, while our Purified Linseed Oil — same 75 ml bottle, same Rs. 2,100 — sits pale and runs freely. The label makes the same point in French: this one is Huile de Lin Polymérisée, that one Huile de Lin Purifiée. When two bottles look this similar on a shelf, the French line is the reliable way to tell them apart.

What stand oil buys you beyond the flat surface is durability and less yellowing than raw oil, and what it costs you is time. It is the slowest drying of the oils we stock, so a glaze built with it needs patience rather than a deadline. Most painters cut it with a thinner rather than using it neat, because neat stand oil is genuinely thick.

This is not the first linseed oil to own. If you have none, buy the Purified — it is the general-purpose bottle. Buy stand oil second, when a smooth glazed passage or a levelled surface is something you specifically want and cannot get from ordinary oil.
