A water pot that folds. The dark green body concertinas down on its ribs until it is a shallow disc barely thicker than a coaster, and pulls back up into a full pot when you need it. The card names it CLIC & GO and repeats what it is in seven languages — Faltbarer Wasserbecher, Foldable water pot, Gobelet à eau pliable, Ciotola per l'acqua richiudibile, Vaso plegable para el agua, and again in Japanese and Korean.

The reason to own one is bag space. A watercolour kit is small and flat — a paint box, a pad, a palette, a roll of brushes — and then there is the water pot, a rigid empty cylinder that takes more room than everything else together and cannot be filled with anything. Collapsed, this one slides in beside the paint box and disappears.

The rim is scalloped rather than round, and the notches take a brush handle. In one of our photographs a brush lies across the top resting in a scallop, which is exactly how a brush should wait between washes — a brush stood on its tip in a jar of water splays and bends until it will not hold a point again, and that, not wear, is what kills most brushes.

Inside, the tan liner is a light background against dark green sides. Water in a dark pot is water you cannot judge, and a rinse dish only tells you it needs changing if you can see the colour that has gone into it. This one shows you.

It suits the way painting actually happens outside a studio here: on a hostel desk, a dining table cleared for an hour, a rooftop, a college corridor. Nothing on the card claims a leak-proof lid or a sealed base, so we do not either — this is a rinse pot to fill and empty on the spot, not a container to carry water in.
