Black gesso is not paint. It is the coat that goes on before the painting, and it does two jobs at once: it seals the surface so paint sits on top instead of soaking in, and it gives the whole work a black ground to build from. The label calls it a universal primer, printed in three languages across the tan band as Universal primer, Peinture d'apprêt universelle, Pintura base universal.

Starting black rather than white changes what you are doing. On white, every colour you lay down darkens the surface; on black, every colour lightens it, so highlights become the thing you add and the darks are already there. Night scenes, neon and metallic work, chalk-style lettering and portrait work with strong contrast are all far quicker from a black ground than from a white one, because the shadows cost you nothing.

Our photographs show what that looks like in practice. The jar is opened beside a black-primed board, a palette knife lifts a thick ribbon of the gesso, and a wide brush lays a solid black band that covers in one pass rather than going on grey and streaky. It is a screw-lid jar rather than a squeeze bottle, which is the right container for something you scoop and brush rather than pour.
